ABOUT THE Chihuahua
History
The Chihuahua’s history is both fascinating and somewhat mysterious. It’s widely believed that they descend from an ancient breed called the Techichi, which was kept by the Toltec civilization in present-day Mexico around the 9th century. The Techichi was a small, mute dog used in religious ceremonies and thought to have spiritual significance. When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs, they refined the breed, making it smaller and more agile. The Aztecs continued to keep and breed the Techichi, but the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s led to the breed nearly vanishing.
The breed resurfaced in the Mexican state of Chihuahua in the mid-19th century, where it was named after the region. American tourists were drawn to these tiny dogs, bringing them back to the United States, where they quickly gained popularity. The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the Chihuahua in 1904.
Today’s Chihuahua, known for its small size, large eyes, and charming personality, differs from the Techichi but retains some of its ancient ancestors’ qualities. Over the years, breeders have focused on creating a dog with a distinct look and loyal temperament. With their long history and connection to ancient civilizations, Chihuahuas have become one of the most beloved small dog breeds in the world.
Temperament
Chihuahuas have a temperament that is affectionate, alert, and confident, with a strong sense of loyalty to their families. Known for their devotion, they often form particularly strong bonds with one or two people, making them excellent companions. Although small, Chihuahuas tend to be courageous and spirited, sometimes displaying a “big dog” attitude. They are also intelligent and quick to learn, which makes training relatively straightforward, especially with positive reinforcement. However, due to their sensitive nature, they can be wary or reserved with strangers, and early socialization is crucial to help them feel comfortable in various situations. When it comes to children, Chihuahuas can be good with older, gentle kids who understand how to handle small dogs. Their strong loyalty and alertness make them excellent watchdogs despite their size, as they’re quick to alert their owners to new people or situations..
Health
Chihuahua have a life expectancy of 12 to 20 years and are generally quite healthy. Some health problems that can occur include low thyroid, allergies, and skin conditions.
